Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What type of 3D printers do you have?
We use DaVinci Jr. printers for all classes and have one Ultimaker 2+ for special projects and, in the future, for advanced training. Please refer to the manufacturers websites for additional specifications or capabilities.
What materials do you use for 3D printing?
We only use PLA in our 3D printers, which is biodegradable and non-toxic. There is a variety of colors which you can see by stopping by our storefront during open hours.
Do you offer 3D printing or machining services?
We reserve availability of our printers to support our classes and workshops. However, we would be glad to discuss with you any projects or group activities you may have in mind. AVEX is not a manufacturer or service bureau, however, we regularly work with a variety of sources for custom parts or assemblies. Please stop by our storefront during open hours to discuss further.
What type of CNC (computer numerical control) machining training and services do you offer?
We teach computerized milling using a Shopbot Desktop router with the spindle option (please refer to Shopbot website for specifications). We have a small lathe used to support work associated with classes and workshops, but generally do not provide training in lathe turning operations.
We exclusively use CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) processes and do not teach G-codes or other programming languages. Our focus is on using digital tools to design and manufacture parts, assemblies and complete products in support of our classes and workshops. We can machine in plastics, brass and aluminum and can hold tolerances of +/- 0.001 inches.
We do not provide CNC machine operator training and generally do not supply machining services. Please feel free to stop by our storefront during open hours to discuss any specific needs or projects you may have.
